Green Tips
green driving (nothing to do with golf)
Here is some tips around economic driving

Avoid aggressive stop starts as high power driving consumes a lots of fuel
Think ahead to avoid unnecessary acceleration and heavy braking
Plan your trips to avoid peak hour and school hour traffic
Take the load off – do not carry unnecessary weight in the vehicle
Try using the window or vents before turning on the air conditioning
Keep the tires properly inflated
Tune up the car regularly to maintain efficiency
Share trips with other going to the same place or meeting
Or try public transport as an alternative

Energy rating for appliances & Green Wash
Our household appliance consumes a lot of energy and there are so many products out there, how do you know which is more energy efficient than another. Now there is an Australian Energy Rating system. On the web page is a range of information including comparative energy use and energy cost over 10 years as well as its star rating.

But beware of Greenwash (no it is not eco efficient washing machines)
Green washing (green whitewash) is the practice of companies disingenuously spinning their products and policies as environmentally friendly, such as by presenting cost cuts as reductions in use of resources. It is a deceptive use of green PR or green marketing. Recently LG was caught for a third time for making false claims about the environmental performance of some of it’s products. So always check with independent reviews such as Choice before you buy.

Saving the Earth starts with saving paper
How many of us use the double sided function with printer controls. How many of us think about reading and not printing out a document and saving it electronically for later. The world Wildlife Fund estimates that the average office worker uses 10,000 sheets of paper per year.

Did you know that over 40% of commercially harvested trees are for paper production?
How much energy is used to convert that tree into paper as well as transporting it to the final use in the office for example.

Here's some suggestions on how to save paper:
Printing double sided - making it the default setting for the printer
Paperless meeting minutes - sending out the minutes electronically and letting people use their laptops to read during meetings
Setting goals for the office to reach by the end of the year, such as 25% measuring purchases of new paper
Recycling waste paper into the paper recycling bin only
Using paper with a high recycle component

Green ways to stay warm in the cooler months
Heating is a major contributor to household energy costs and climate change during winter. Not only do we spend more money to warm our homes but we are use more energy which increases carbon emissions.
What simple ways can we reduce the power bill and help the environment?

Fit thick and close fitting curtains to all the windows. Open them during sunny days to warm the building and close them at night to retain the heat.
Close off rooms and areas of your home you are not using. There is no point heating areas you are not using.
Seal off draughts and gaps. Simple things such as a door snake (long sock filled with sand) or foam door draught sealers are available from your local hardware store.
Turning your heating down a few degrees can make a huge difference. The recommended temperature is around 20۫C.
Run ceiling fans in reverse to push the warm air back down.
Wear more layers like a nice woolly jumper rather than turning up the heating.
Book in for an Low Income Household Refit Program from the NSW Government if you qualify – you get a door draught snake and draught excluding strips and lots of good advice for free.
